When blood from the lungs arrives at a cell the hemoglobin gives up the bond with O2 for H+ coming from carbonic acid which is being produced when CO2 enters the blood stream. then the carbonic acid and H+ make there way back to the lungs where they will bond and turn back into CO2 where they will exit the body.
